Coen van Gulijk

Coen van Gulijk

Senior Scientist; Visiting professor

TNO; University of Huddersfield; Delft University of Technology

Coen van Gulijk was the first researcher in Europe to apply text processing for safety. The point in case being railway safety. Back in 2014, he and his team could do little more than group near-miss incident reports into groups. But eventually, it became technically possible to match unstructured reports in a swiss multi-lingual database (German, French and Italian) to individual risk control measures with an accuracy of 98,5%. Hands-on experience and a deep technical understanding of what text-analysis engines actually do makes Coen a valuable partner to the network.

Coen recognizes the spectacular capacity for learning with (V)LLMs. At the same time he is concerned about knowledge extraction. Prompt engineering, for instance, simply steers the probabilistic inference mechanism toward a desired outcome. Can you really speak about unbiased answers when you do that? It is questions like these that Coen can help out with in ELOQUENCE.

Proofs (proofs.io)

Alexandre holds a PhD in Machine Learning during which he has developed new AI methods for prediction and explanation of justice decisions. In particular, he built the European Court of Human Rights Open Data project, the largest curated and evolving datasets about the legal domain: the European Court of Human Rights Open Data project.
Professionally, he worked as an R&D engineer at IBM before joining the Financial Crime Threat Mitigation department at HSBC. There, he developed and validated large models and managed the governance cycle of global models (>200M users) built on critically private information, in order to fight against money laundering, terrorism, human trafficking, or fraud.
After that, he joined a start-up to develop a data synthesizer based on new generative models, notably for privacy purposes or counterfactual analysis.
His current research focuses on AI agents, autonomous systems and LLMs, in particular, applied to critical systems and society-impacting processes.
