Coen van Gulijk

Senior Scientist; Visiting professor

TNO; University of Huddersfield; Delft University of Technology

Coen van Gulijk was the first researcher in Europe to apply text processing for safety. The point in case being railway safety. Back in 2014, he and his team could do little more than group near-miss incident reports into groups. But eventually, it became technically possible to match unstructured reports in a swiss multi-lingual database (German, French and Italian) to individual risk control measures with an accuracy of 98,5%. Hands-on experience and a deep technical understanding of what text-analysis engines actually do makes Coen a valuable partner to the network.

Coen recognizes the spectacular capacity for learning with (V)LLMs. At the same time he is concerned about knowledge extraction. Prompt engineering, for instance, simply steers the probabilistic inference mechanism toward a desired outcome. Can you really speak about unbiased answers when you do that? It is questions like these that Coen can help out with in ELOQUENCE.
